MATERIAL GRAMMER of TOEFL STRUCTURE

TOEFL test materials consisted of four sessions, which typically must be completed in a total time of 3 hours. Each session has its own time limit,so it takes the ability to solve the "true and fast". Each session include:

1.   Reading
The Reading section consists of 3–5 passages, each approximately 700 words in length and questions about the passages. The passages are on academic topics; they are the kind of material that might be found in an undergraduate university textbook. Passages require understanding of rhetorical functions such as cause-effect, compare-contrast and argumentation. Students answer questions about main ideas, details, inferences, essential information, sentence insertion, vocabulary, rhetorical purpose and overall ideas. New types of questions in the TOEFL iBT test require filling out tables or completing summaries. Prior knowledge of the subject under discussion is not necessary to come to the correct answer.

2.   Listening
The Listening section consists of six passages 3–5 minutes in length and questions about the passages. These passages include two student conversations and four academic lectures or discussions. A conversation involves two speakers, a student and either a professor or a campus service provider. A lecture is a self-contained portion of an academic lecture, which may involve student participation and does not assume specialized background knowledge in the subject area. Each conversation and lecture stimulus is heard only once. Test-takers may take notes while they listen and they may refer to their notes when they answer the questions. Each conversation is associated with five questions and each lecture with six. The questions are meant to measure the ability to understand main ideas, important details, implications, relationships between ideas, organization of information, speaker purpose and speaker attitude.

3.   Speaking
The Speaking section consists of six tasks: two independent tasks and four integrated tasks. In the two independent tasks, test-takers answer opinion questions on familiar topics. They are evaluated on their ability to speak spontaneously and convey their ideas clearly and coherently. In two of the integrated tasks, test-takers read a short passage, listen to an academic course lecture or a conversation about campus life and answer a question by combining appropriate information from the text and the talk. In the two remaining integrated tasks, test-takers listen to an academic course lecture or a conversation about campus life and then respond to a question about what they heard. In the integrated tasks, test-takers are evaluated on their ability to appropriately synthesize and effectively convey information from the reading and listening material. Test-takers may take notes as they read and listen and may use their notes to help prepare their responses. Test-takers are given a short preparation time before they have to begin speaking. The responses are digitally recorded, sent to ETS’s Online Scoring Network (OSN) and evaluated by three to six raters.

4.   Writing
The Writing section measures a test taker's ability to write in an academic setting and consists of two tasks: one integrated task and one independent task. In the integrated task, test-takers read a passage on an academic topic and then listen to a speaker discuss the same topic. The test-taker will then write a summary about the important points in the listening passage and explain how these relate to the key points of the reading passage. In the independent task, the test-taker must write an essay that states, explains, and supports their opinion on an issue, supporting their opinions or choices, rather than simply listing personal preferences or choices. Responses are sent to the ETS OSN and evaluated by four raters.

Three Kinds of Sentences
There are three kinds of sentences: simple, compound, and complex. Look at the following samples to see how the three types of sentences differ from each other.
1.    Simple sentence: Fido loves to greet visitors. Simple sentences contain one independent clause that expresses a complete thought.
2.    Compound sentence: Fido loves to greet visitors, and he often slobbers all over them. Compound sentences contain two (or more) independent clauses and no dependent clauses.
3.    Complex sentence: Because Fido is such a happy dog, many neighbors don't mind his slobbering. Complex sentences contain one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.

Compound-complex sentences are also possible. They combine the two categories, and can contain two or more independent clauses as well as one or more dependent clause. Here is an example of a compound-complex sentence:
Because Fido is such a happy dog, he often slobbers on visitors, and he frequently jumps up frantically to kiss them as well.

Toefl Structure
Secara umum, tidak ada perbedaan yang sangat mencolok antara struktur kalimat bahasa Inggris dengan bahasa Indonesia, dimana suatu kalimat dibangun atas 4 komponen utama, yaitu
——————————————————————————————————
Subject (S) + Verb (V) + Complement (C) + Modifier (M)
——————————————————————————————————
Dalam bahasa Indonesia, komponen ini kita kenal dengan Subjek + Kata Kerja + Objek + Keterangan
contoh:
We studied grammar last week
We + studied + grammar + last week
S + V + C + M
_________________________

1. SUBJECT
·         is the agent of sentence in the active voice (agen dari suatu kalimat dalam bentuk aktif)
·         is thing/person that performs or responsible for the action of a sentence(benda/orang/pihak yang melakukan kegiatan atau yang bertanggung jawab terhadap suatu aksi dalam suatu kalimat)
·         normally precedes the verb (biasanya mendahului verb, atau setelah subject biasanya terdapat verb *sama aja kalee…
contoh:
·         I explain how to study English
·         She listens to my explanation
·         They didn’t understand that language
Subjek dapat diketahui dari pertanyaan who (siapa) atau what (apa) yang melakukan perbuatan pada suatu kalimat.
_________________________
2. VERB
Verb is the action of a sentence (aksi atau perbuatan pada suatu kalimat)
Verb phrase: gabungan antara auxilaries dengan main verb (kata kerja utama)
contoh:
·         I am learning English (am = auxilary, learning = main verb)
·         My brother is very clever
·         She has gone home (has = auxilary, gone = main verb)
·         I have been waiting here (have been = auxilary, waiting = main verb)
Setiap kalimat mesti mempunyai Verb
_________________________
3. COMPLEMENT
·         Biasanya berupa noun (kata benda) atau noun phrase (frasa kata benda)
·         biasanya terdapat setelah verb pada kalimat aktif
·         complement menjawab pertanyaan what (apa) atau siapa (whom)
contoh:
·         Sarijon bought a cake yesterday
·         What did Sarijon buy yesterday?  –> a cake.
·         He saw Tony at the movie
·         Whom did he see at the movie? –> Tony
·         I explain pharmacology to my students
·         What do I explain to my students? –> pharmacology
Catatan: Setiap kalimat tidak harus mempunyai complement.
_________________________
4. MODIFIER
·         Modifier menjelaskan time (waktu), place (tempat), atau manner (cara) dari sebuah aksi atau perbuatan
·         Bentuk yang paling umum dari modifier adalah prepositional phrase (kelompok kata yang dimulai dengan sebuah preposition dan diakhiri dengan sebuah noun
·         Preposition = on, out, under, behind, etc…
·         Modifier menjawab pertanyaan when (kapan), where (dimana), atau how (bagaimana)
contoh:
·         John bought a book at a book fair
·         Where did John buy a book? –> at a book fair
·         She is driving very fast
·         How is she driving? –> very fast
·         I posted my application yesterday
·         When do I post my application? –> yesterday

Comparative (tingkat lebih) menunjukkan kurang atau lebih sebuah atribut tertentu - yakni membandingkan dua hal atau lebih. Comparative umumnya digunakan untuk membandingkan dua hal, dan superlative (tingkat paling) digunakan untuk membandingkan tiga hal atau lebih.
Jika sudah jelas kita hanya akan membuat perbandingan dengan sesuatu yang lain, maka kita cukup menggunakan bentuk comparative. Contoh:
·         I am faster.
·         She is older.
Atau kita bisa menggunakan than sebelum sesuatu yang kita jadikan pembanding. Contoh:
·         I am faster than John.
·         She is taller than me.
Bentuk superlative (tingkat paling) tidak menggunakan than dan selalu didahuluui oleh artikel definit the. Contoh:
·         I am the tallest student in my school.

Contoh:
·         - big - bigger
·         hot - hotter
·         thin - thinner
Kata sifat dengan 2 suku kata
Jika kata sifat memiliki dua atau lebih suku kata, kita menambahkan moresebelum kata sifat. Contoh:
·         This book is more expensive than that book.
·         This picture is more beautiful.
Akan tetapi, ada banyak pengecualian terhadap aturan satu/dua suku -kata ini.
Beberapa kata dengan 2 suku-kata memiliki sifat yang mirip dengan kata yang memiliki 1 suku-kata. Contoh:
·         This is easier - Benar
·         This is more easy - Tidak benar
·         This is simpler - Benar
·         This is more simple - Tidak benar
Dan beberapa kata sifat bisa menggunakan kedua bentuk komparatif. Contoh:
- clever - cleverer - more clever: These are all correct.
- quiet - quieter - more quiet: These are all correct.
Contoh:
·         This book is the most expensive book.
·         This picture is the most beautiful picture in the museum.
Bentuk tidak beraturan
Ada beberapa bentuk tidak beraturan. Berikut beberapa kata sifat beserta bentuk komparatif dan superlatif yang tidak beraturan.
·         good - better - best
·         bad - worse - worst
·         far - farther - farthest
·         far - further - furthest
·         little - less - least
·         much/many - more - most
Contoh:
·         You are the best student in the world!
·         I am far from home, he is further from home, but he is the furthest from home.
Seperti biasanya, pembahasan ini cukup rumit dengan kaidah-kaidah yang ada tetapi dengan praktik dan pengalaman ini akan menjadi lebih sederhana.

Contoh penggunaan dalam percakapan

1) How’s the weather in your country?
The summer is much hotter than here, and the winter is also much colder. The best time is spring, it’s beautiful!

2) Which restaurant do you like?
Bella Rosa is good, they’ve got good food but it’s expensive. McDonalds is cheaper, but it’s really unhealthy. I think the Vietnamese restaurant is the best, it’s the cheapest, the healthiest, and the most delicious!

3) How’s your English going?
Oh, it’s much better these days. It’s easier than before, and I know more words and I can speak more confidently. It’s great.
I’m really glad to hear it. Keep up the great work!

Penggunaan Sentence
Sentence (Kalimat) adalah susunan kata-kata yang berpola tertentu yang membentuk satu kesatuan makna yang dapat dipahami dengan baik. Apabila ada kata-kata yang tersusun namun tidak mempunyai makna sama sekali dan tidak dapat dipahami maksudnya itu berarti bukan kalimat. Perhatikan contoh-contoh kalimat bahasa Indonesia di bawah ini:
Contoh:
Saya pergi ke Bali.
Mereka pepaya jatuh bingung sekali.

Contoh kalimat:
The dog barked.
(Anjing itu menggonggong)
Water is boiling.
(Air sedang mendidih)
My father sleeps.
(Ayah saya tidur)

2. SUBJEK + KATA KERJA + OBJEK
Contoh kalimat:
I eat a mango.
(Saya makan sebuah mangga)
She writes a letter.
(Dia menulis sebuah surat)
He called you.
(Dia menelpon kamu)

3. SUBJEK + KATA KERJA + PELENGKAP
Kata kerja yang digunakan padapola ini disebut juga dengan Linking Verbs seperti be, become, get, look, seem, taste, sound, dll.
Pelengkap pada pola ke-3 ini dapat berupa kata benda, frase kata benda, kata sifat, frase kata sifat, dll.
Contoh:
It is a book.
(Ini sebuah buku)
You look beautiful.
(Kamu kelihatan cantik)
She is rich.
(Dia kaya)

4. SUBJEK + KATA KERJA + KETERANGAN
Setelah kata kerja, kita juga dapat meletakkan kata keterangan, seperti frase kata keterangan (Adverbial Phrase), Frase Kata Depan (Prepositional Phrase) atau Frase Kata Benda (Noun Phrase)
Contoh:
She will come tomorrow. –> Adverbial Phrase
(Dia akan datang besok)
William is at my house. –> Prepositional Phrase
(William ada di rumah saya)
My mother swims every Sundays. –> Noun Phrase
(Ibu saya berenang setiap hari Minggu)

5. SUBJEK + KATA KERJA + OBJEK + OBJEK
kadangkala dalam sebuah kalimat terdiri dari 2 objek. Objek pertama biasanya adalah Objek Tak Langsung, sedangkan Objek yang kedua adalah Objek Langsung.
Apa bedanya? Objek Langsung adalah objek langsung dari Kata Kerja, sedangkan Objek Tak Langsung bukan. Untuk lebih jelasnya, perhatikan ilustrasi kalimat Bahasa Indonesia di bawah ini:
Ibu membelikan saya sebuah boneka.
Ibu membelikan apa? –> Boneka
Boneka adalah Objek Langsung. Cara menemukan Objek langsung adalah dengan memberikan pertanyaan seperti contoh kalimat di atas. Saya adalah Objek Tak Langsung.
Contoh:
She told us a story.
(Dia menceritakan kepada kami sebuah cerita), atau
(Dia menceritakan sebuah cerita kepada kami)
My mother bought me a doll.
(Ibu membelikan saya sebuah boneka) atau
(Ibu membelikan sebuah boneka untuk saya)
She gives me a present.
(Dia memberikan saya sebuah hadiah) atau
(Dia memberikan sebuah hadiah kepada saya)

6. SUBJEK + KATA KERJA + OBJEK + PELENGKAP
Pelengkap pada akhir kalimat harus berhubungan dengan Objek kalimat.
Contoh:
The song makes him famous.
(Lagu ini yang membuatnya jadi terkenal)
The extra job of the Boss keeps me very busy.
(Pekerjaan tambahan dari boss membuat saya jadi sangat sibuk)
The magician gives the audience a big surprise.
(Pesulap itu memberikan kejutan besar bagi penonton)

7. SUBJEK + KATA KERJA + OBJEK + KATA KETERANGAN
Kata keterangan apapun yang diletakkan di belakang Objek juga harus berhubungan dengan Objek.
Contoh:
Sheila parks her car in the garage.
(Sheila memparkirkan mobilnya di dalam garasi)
I put my wallet in my pocket.
(Saya menyimpan dompet saya di dalam saku saya)
Robert hides the knife in his jacket.
(Robert menyembunyikan pisau itu di dalam jaketnya)
